      The Jolie Hybrid Harp

This Musicmakers Jolie Hybrid Harp is the holy grail of harp-making. This lever harp weighs about 13 pounds, produces a full, rich tone, and withstands the tension of all the strings.

Until now, this seemed like an unachievable goal. In recent years we have seen the introduction of carbon fiber harps and have been very impressed! We are amazed at how light they can be and how much abuse they can withstand. But working with wood is where our heart is. The depth of beauty and the warm, inviting tone of wood lever harps are qualities we were not willing to give up. So we began to consider how we might combine the ultra light weight and durability of carbon fiber with the natural beauty and depth of tone you get with wood.

Enter the Jolie Hybrid - a carbon fiber and wood hybrid lever harp.

      Soundboard Upgrades

Our harps use an aircraft grade birch plywood. It has 6 layers of birch laminated together and is just 1/8" thick. We have used this same material on our soundboards for years because it provides exceptional strength and stability as well as a clear, consitent tone.

Birch, however, is a plain looking wood without much in the way of interesting grain patterns. There is nothing wrong with that. However, many harpists prefer something with more visual appeal. We have sourced a variety of interesting and gorgeous veneers that can be applied to the soundboard. Each veneer is unique and turns your soundboard into an eye-catching, head-turning, work of art.

Does adding a soundboard veneer effect the tone of the harp? Yes - it does, although not very much. Each veneer is slightly different but, in general, adding a soundboard veneer will trend the tone of the harp to be slightly warmer.

Click here to see available soundboard upgrades for the Jolie Harp.

Here's a couple of pictures of our Sonnet Lap Harp with the quilted maple upgrade.

      Vivid Color Upgrade

      Vivid Color Harps

We have always loved the natural grain of the woods we use and didn't want the color to hide that; we wanted the color to accentuate the grain. Maple, being a wood that is lighter in color, makes the perfect canvas for our vivid color stains.

Maple is also available with some highly figured and beautiful grain patterns. We use select curly maple for the sides, neck, and pillar and offer a quilted maple veneer upgrade on the soundboard. The stain interacts with the figured grain patterns in exciting and surprising ways.

Maple is a harder wood than cherry so the vivid color version of any harp will weigh roughly 10% more than the standard version and the sound will tend to be slightly brighter.

Blue Jolie Hybrid: I am smitten
I am in love with my Jolie hybrid harp- gorgeous tone, blue color, lightweight. I have always played Dusty Strings harps for their deep resonance yet the Jolie's long sustain and deep resonance have stolen my heart. As a performer with my violinist husband her light tension makes for easy playing of fast jigs. For my therapeutic work, her deep tones and soothing sounds please the ear deeply. And how easy she is to pack up in her case! In a matter of minutes she slides in with no resistance or effort- a genius design. Elegant, portable, wonderful sound- you can't go wrong. My Bluebird has rekindled my passion for the harp in so many ways. You will love dealing with Musicmakers too- responsive and generous.

      Love it!
Making such a big purchase without ever playing one was scary! The videos were really helpful and the customer service was amazing. The harp came much more quickly than I anticipated. I was definitely not disappointed. It is beautiful. The lower notes are so full and rich. I am definitely in love.

      Mr.
At 87, my Dusty Strings Ravenna was a chore to take to my volunteer gigs at a hospital and an assisted living dining room. My teacher plays a regular Jolie, so I went to Music Makers and played a Jolie Hybrid for half an hour. Wow! I was "in love". So now I have my own at home. What a rich, full sound, range of expression, and such a light weight. I love it and my listeners love it. There is nothing out there to compare with this beautiful instrument. And there are no finer folks to deal with than the Music Makers crew.

      My 2nd harp
I got my Jolie because I needed a light weight harp to travel with. My other harp (Dusty Strings) is beautiful but too heavy to carry up and down my many stairs in my home. The Jolie has a lovely sound and is beautiful. Perfect to take to lessons and on local trips.

So happy with purple Jolie Hybrid
Have loved my Jolie Hybrid for 5 years. Great sound, beautiful, lightweight, good range. And then I saw the purple vivid color harps in person at Somerset. And had to have a purple Jolie Hybrid and now I do. Beautiful resonant tone. And gorgeous. Great service from Musicmakers.

      I love it!
I have now had my Jolie Hybrid for about a month. I love everything about it. The weight. The sound. The tension. How it looks. How it feels. I have a Dusty Strings FH36 in walnut which I also love. The Jolie is the perfect compliment to it. A light weight harp with a gorgeous tone. Comfortable to hold and play. And Musicmakers was so easy to deal with. Thanks to all.

      I love this harp!
Like for many harpers, my 30 lb. lever harp, that was light enough to put in my car or carry to outside gigs when I bought it 18 years ago, now has become much heavier.. When I needed to find help to get my harp up a flight of steps, I decided it was time for a lighter harp. I've tried multiple carbon fiber harps, but the sound left me completely unsatisfied. Enter Musicmakers and the Jolie hybrid. I played one of the early Jolie hybrids at a harp conference many years ago. I was impressed then by the rich and complex sound and tone that comes from wood, and figured that it had only gotten better over the years. So I did what I swore I'd never do: buy a harp sight unseen and sound unheard. I am completely impressed with my new Jolie. First of all, it is beautiful! Matt advised that the quilted maple soundboard would make the tone warmer, and it does that, as well as add another level of gorgeousness to the harp. I love the sound. There's a rich underlay to the tone, and in the highest register, it is clear and bell-like. As the harp settles into itself, its voice just keeps getting richer. When I play at outdoor labyrinths, the harp is heard easily over the noise of traffic and sirens without any additional plucking effort. The string tension is easy on my hands and arthritic thumbs. I can easily reach all the bass strings. The Camac levers are a joy to use. The case is easy to use and gives excellent protection. There are straps in all the right places to make car loading easy. And then there's the weight. In its case, 14 lbs., on its own, 13lbs. Much less than a bag of birdseed. I can load it and move it easily, without needing my bulky and heavy harp cart. Musicmakers' customer service is exceptional. I received ongoing information about the status of my order, as well as what to expect when it was shipped. The level of care and the layers of protection for successful, damage-free shipping were amazing, and completely effective. Leg installation instructions were clear and easy to follow. I've had a couple of post-delivery questions that Matt quickly answered. I think this is a great harp from a great company that is filled with people who care about both the excellence of their instruments and their customers. The Jolie hybrid combines all the loveliness of a wood instrument with all the weight reduction of carbon fiber. I am so glad that I bought mine.

      Very satisfied!
This is a whole lot of harp for the size - great big sound, beautiful resonance, responsive string tension, and astonishingly light weight. The depth is good for a fairly small person - I've sometimes found my 36-string harp too much of a stretch to the bass. The Jolie Hybrid is a perfect harp for road trips and hospital/hospice work, and a pleasure to practice on. Very glad to have found it!

      A harp to truly love!
I love my Jolie Hybrid harp! I have gone through several harps from a variety of manufacturers looking for the perfect combination of sound, beauty and functionality. It's only 13 pounds! Perfect for my aging back, making it a snap to put in and take out of my car (which I do many times a day.) It has a big sound--surprising for a harp of this size! A rich, warm sweet voice with a nice long sustain. And I was so pleased to find how easy it was on my hands to play this harp! The aching in my fingers was threatening to stop my playing. What a relief to play this harp. The team at Music Makers--especially Jacob--went out of their way to customize my harp shape and to select the most gorgeous woods. They were endlessly patient with my myriad of questions. The lights are a must and so pretty. They create a lovely ambiance while illuminating my hands and music so I can play. The sound pick up works amazingly well--a clear, clean sound with lots of power. And even though I haul it around in my car all day, it stays in tune very well. I couldn't be happier. Thank you Music Makers for your dedication to bringing us the newest technology and preserving the classic beauty and rich sound of the harp!

      One Fine Harp!
I have been a harp performer, teacher and therapeutic harp practitioner for several years. During this time I have played and/or owned several fine instruments. Thanks to Jacob Nelson of Musicmakers in Stillwater MN, I now own a harp that fulfills all of my harp expectations. The Jolie hybrid is lightweight, attractive with a beautiful finish, and easy to play with just the right string spacing and tension. Above all, the combination of wood and carbon fiber produces a lovely sound. A Big Thank you to Jacob Nelson and the Musicmakers staff, for being creative leaders in the harp world! Buy this harp!
I have been playing a gut-strung harp for nine years. I was always impressed with the warm sound, but it was a HEAVY instrument. I had also been researching a carbon fiber harp, but the price point was out of my range. Enter the Jolie Hybrid! I had the opportunity to play on my harp teacher's Jolie and loved the rich, yet bright sound. Shortly after, I learned that Musicmakers had a new hybrid model making the original so much lighter. This is truly a remarkable harp. The perfect string tension leads to an easy touch allowing for more speed, and accuracy with ornaments. Though it is extremely portable, the sound is not at all compromised. It is by far the most beautiful sounding harp I have tried. If you are at all on the fence about buying this model, fear not! You will be more than impressed. Buy this harp!

The Jolie Hybrid, what a wonderful harp!!
So, I started out renting this harp on my summer visit to Minnesota, and it blew me away - I just had to buy it!! I love everything about it - the beautiful, resonant sound; the incredibly light weight - I had always dreamed of a harp I could carry around myself and not have to depend on my husband to help me!; the hand-friendly string tension; the Truitt levers and sleek design, with beautiful mahogany wood. Simply, I'm in love! Thanks, Musicmakers, for building such an awesome harp!!
